Do you have a favorite payment format? Paypal is charging over 5% now for invoicing and receiving payments. I am not sure if this is because so far my clients have been international. But perhaps there's a more affordable way to receive payment?
I like Freshbooks a lot for keeping track of my payments and projects (including time spent on tasks for each). They also allow you to send and receive payments; the fee is 2.9% + $.30 for credit card payments and 1% for bank transfers. So maybe that's a workable option?
At the beginning I tried to work around fees, whether it was requesting checks or wires or something else, but honestly I find the ease of invoicing through Freshbooks has been worth it. Payments are usually made immediately (since people like paying with credit card and it's so convenient), and I don't need to track the invoices and their status in a separate spreadsheet.
No one likes paying fees, but I find them a bit easier to take if I reframe them as another bit of overhead that must be taken into account when I set my rates.
I took Erin's class last year. It helped ease my mind about AI, although I still don't use AI for copyediting much. I recently went through my expenses and deleted my subscriptions to some of the services and publications. I also added others. I'm new to copyediting and wonder how long my business can go on sustaining a loss.
I am somewhat surprised by how much I'm looking forward to the class. I think having my mind eased will make it valuable enough!
Yes, it can be difficult starting out, even if you have lots of experience. Everyone's experience will vary, of course, but I don't think I matched my annual salary at my full-time job until two or three years in. I hope to talk about this more in a future post. Good luck to you.

Thanks for weighing in, Marcy.
